01:55 guest274579 test

08:15 hughdog hello

08:15 hughdog is this where the class is today

10:29 RichardCampbell test

10:29 sealiz test

10:29 sealiz you passed :)

10:32 sealiz does anybody know when this is supposed to start?

10:32 hughdog test

10:32 hughdog i thought 12:30 est

10:33 sealiz ok - thanks

10:33 hughdog np

10:35 hughdog is the presenter here

10:35 sealiz while we're waiting I have a question for folks - what video compression tool are you using that works?

10:36 sealiz and preserves the quality from your original video?

10:36 hughdog flash video converter

10:37 hughdog it is part of flash cs3

10:37 sealiz yeah but it doesn't seem to compress that much - but thanks

10:37 gabe hi everyone! (sorry, i was having trouble connecting on my other computer.)

10:38 Scott good question. I just ordered AVS4U, but I can't say much about it yet

10:38 gabe sealiz- how was your source video you're looking to compress created?

10:38 sealiz thanks Scott

10:38 gabe have you looked at sorenson squeeze? we recommend that and many of our customers use it.

10:38 sealiz yes

10:38 sealiz thanks

10:38 RichardCampbell <<using Camtasia 5.02 - but I am also a beta tester for Techsmith and a guest moderator for their forum, and Flash video is high on their agenda - can't say more than that - I am not a Techsmith employee

10:38 sealiz sorry - was just asking while I was waiting :) My apologies; didn't mean to hijack the conversation

10:39 gabe no apologies necessary! that's what the live chat is all about. :)

10:39 Scott not at all, thanks for the question

10:39 sealiz Already use Camtasia - love their product

10:39 sealiz and it's easy to put into Articulate

10:39 Scott I want something free, since I don't expect to use it much.

10:39 sealiz but these files are HUGE is my problem - Camtasia, video, audio, etc.

10:39 sealiz free is ALWAYS good :)

10:39 gabe we've had good results with camtasia, too- we used it to create all those AO tutorials.

10:40 sealiz I'm trying to deliver some of this via m-learning and whew - it's just not working so thank you guys for your suggestions- hugely appreciated!

10:40 Scott i can't scroll up; what was the first software mentioned again please?

10:40 sealiz flash video converter

10:40 sealiz I've been using Swsh this week

10:40 Scott and the second

10:40 sealiz AVS4U

10:40 sealiz then Sorenson Squeeze

10:40 RichardCampbell <« file size can be managed if you are careful in recording and editing

10:40 gabe i mentioned sorenson squeeze - don't know if you saw that, scott.

10:40 Scott sorenson, thanks

10:41 Brent stepping back a little, in the scriptinganswers demo he had a video of himself talking, I am at a basic level, do you know a good camera to do this and how he created the white background...sorry for the novice question.

10:42 RickW5 I like to use backgrounds that contrast with the speaker

10:42 sealiz I record with a green screen then add teh background

10:42 sealiz that way I can use photo backgrounds that match to what the "feel" of the presentation is

10:42 sealiz using a Canon camera right now

10:43 sealiz and royalphotostock.com is excellent imo for getting stock photos that can be used this way

10:43 RickW5 do you use talking head or in the main frame?

10:44 sealiz Gabe - is Articulate planning on having more functionality with videos in the near future - the only thing I've found that works if you're not in Engage is doing the .flv/.swf as a separate window instead of embedding it on the particular slide

10:44 RickW5 I embed in the main wndow of AP with no problem

10:45 RichardCampbell Look at Adobe Visual communicator for "talking head" TV type presentationn software

10:45 sealiz we've tried it 6 times over the last 6 months - every single time there is a problem - do it as a "open in a new window" and no problem at all

10:45 gabe what issues are you running into, sealiz? i believe you said in the forums that you submitted a case to us already, right?

10:45 sealiz yes I did

10:45 sealiz it runs fine while in a "new window" - trying to embed it it crashes

10:45 gabe (company policy is that we can't disclose future plans, but we do have a feature request form for features you'd like to see.)

10:45 Jen how long is the video?

10:45 sealiz video is 2:30

10:46 gabe what version of presenter are you using, sealiz?

10:46 sealiz 5.02 (latest) - for .ppt2007

10:46 gabe we can also probably take a look at it for you via your support case.

10:46 gabe for ppt2007 you'll want to ensure you're using 5.3

10:46 sealiz I'm using the latest whatever it may be

10:46 gabe 5.2 is latest for non-vista/non-ppt2007

10:47 gabe how did you create the video?

10:47 sealiz with a video camera (professional) - then take it and convert it to .swf

10:48 sealiz no big deal - just wondered how the rest of you were working with video in your modules - thanks Gabe

10:48 gabe no problem. and what did you use to convert to swf? sorenson?

10:50 hughdog i found its not the file size as much as how well it streams

10:50 Scott9 really? what would affect how well it streams?

10:51 hughdog i found it more on how well the video streams than the size of the file

10:52 RichardCampbell what is the maximum dimension for a Camtasia movie to play within articulate presenter? in Engage?

10:52 Jen hmm...i'm not sure. is it possible to 'set' a camera to those dimensions?

10:53 gabe in Engage, this is what we recommend: "The optimal size for the image to avoid any scaling is 690x470." - though that's probably big for video.

10:53 gabe in presenter, the slide area is 720x540 - again, big for video, so not always ideal to fill up the whole space.

10:55 Jen so if the video was too big, could I scale it down using something like Adobe Elements?

10:56 hughdog Or you can useFlash Video Encoder

10:56 gabe right, you'd want to scale down dimensions in your source app before exporting SWF to insert in presenter

10:56 Jen that makes sense

10:57 hughdog so swf is better than fvl

10:57 Jen sorry, i have another...what is the best type of video file to work from in raw form to be converted to flash? AVI? MPEG? WMV?

10:58 hughdog sorry flv

10:58 gabe hughdog- swf not necessarily "better" than flv. for longer video, flv can be better

10:59 RichardCampbell swf has a 16,000 frame limitation

10:59 gabe here's a recent blog entry on that topic: http://www.articulate.com/blog/articulate-101-use-engage-to-add-flv-video-to-your-slide/

11:01 gabe jen- that's a good question. i actually don't know what's best for source format, but i'd imagine the conversion to flash is more important than source format.

11:01 sealiz I'm finding .mov and mpeg4 to work best for our stuff

11:02 RickW5 gabe, i agree completely - source format is a function of the tools you use to deal with post-production

11:02 sealiz I'm able to edit it easier with the other tools

11:03 ChrisW Doesn't flv now support h.264?

11:03 Jen okay, thanks gabe

11:03 RickW5 would anyone care to share the workflow that they use to deal with the entire video process from film to AP/Engage publish?

11:04 ChrisW actually, the Flash player supports h.264

11:04 ChrisW So will we be able to embed h.264 video into Articulate?

11:05 Linda HI this is LInda

11:05 gabe hi linda. welcome!

11:05 flaviofusuma hi everybody!

11:05 Cara hey

11:05 Jen hello!

11:05 Cara how are you all?

11:06 Linda I'm trying to put a 9 small (3 min) Captivate videos into Articulate

11:06 Linda when I set them to run automatically

11:06 flaviofusuma I don't saw any questions about that, but will we be able to put more than 1 swf in a single slide in future versions of articulate?

11:06 gabe and chris- good question. i'd have to look into that, but if h.264 works in flash player 6, then it should work in articulate. or does h.264 only work in later versions of FP?

11:06 gabe (see? i learn from all of you, too! :) )

11:06 ChrisW h.264 was added to Flash Player 9, I believe

11:08 gabe flaviofusuma: you can leverage engage for >1 SWF per slide

11:08 gabe there's a related forum discussion here:

http://www.articulate.com/forums/articulate-presen…

11:11 sealiz ?

11:11 sealiz ok - thought I was disconnected - nobody is CHATTING :)

11:11 gabe i'm still here. any other questions / thoughts on anyone's mind?

11:11 RickW5 does seem like most people are pre-occupied

11:12 Linda hoi

11:12 Linda hi

11:12 Jen We decided that the best idea for us to be to use Engage, since we have so many little video clips we'll need to use (showing each stage of a physical therapy exam)

11:12 Linda trying to run 9 Captivate videos inside Articulate

11:12 Jen the Tabs interaction works extremely well

11:12 sealiz Yeah - I like the Tabs but I also like the Media tour in Engage as well

11:12 gabe that's what's nice about engage- you can embed multiple videos- media tour works nicely, too

11:13 sealiz I've been trying to use QuizMaker and video too but that's not working so well

11:13 sealiz with hot spots

11:13 gabe here's an example of a media tour with video i did last year: http://www.articulate.com/blog/astd-2007-video-testimonials-recap/

11:13 sealiz is anybody doing that?

11:13 Jen I haven't tried video with Quizmaker yet

11:13 RickW5 that would be a very interesting set of functions - QM, video and hotspots!

11:13 Jen so I'm no help there

11:14 sealiz yeah Rick - I've been trying and it's just not working so any hints are appreciated

11:14 RickW5 i'm wondering how the time context of a hotspot would work?

11:15 Jen does the video pause? what is the context?

11:15 RickW5 by this i mean that perhaps the item in question is not on a fixed portion of the video, neither i space nor time

11:15 sealiz that's the problem I'm having :)

11:15 sealiz but I think if I can get it to work it would be very cool

11:16 RickW5 that makes perfect sense and i agree this would be very interesting!

11:16 GerryWaz2 I realize most people use Flash video and this chat is about that but many of use other types--like MOV or WMF, especially those of us in a corporate setting. We could really use web object support in Engage to use those.

11:17 RickW5 I'm certain that the implementation of hotspot is location context only

11:17 RickW5 not corporate - sorry

11:17 sealiz I'm corporate Gerry :) and totally agree!

11:18 AllianzDano812 Yeah for Corperate! I wish I use video in our compliance courses! Anything would help :)

11:19 RickW5 why can't you user video for compliance?

11:19 gabe dan- we love the case study you did for us! mark & i showed it off @ training 2008 in atlanta this month. great use of video!

11:19 GerryWaz2 for some of us in corporate, streaming video is tighlty controlled by IT for obvious network reasons. And your corp group doesn't pick Flash for video, you're out of luck with Engage.

11:20 AllianzDano812 We would have to sell our compliance area on the change. We are moving closer to that. They are still living in the PowerPoint linear world.. hard to change a culture

11:20 sealiz Gerry - you have to just convert everything; that's what we've been doing

11:20 gabe (if you haven't seen the allianz case study, you can check it out here: http://www.articulate.com/blog/building-better-training-allianz-case-study/)

11:20 AllianzDano812 We are working on it

11:20 GerryWaz2 We have a central service for corp video and it's all windows Media

11:20 sealiz the other thing is that you can store videos on an outside server (outside of Artaiculate) and then point to it through Articulate

11:20 AllianzDano812 Thanks Gabe!

11:20 RickW5 that makes sense, but besides being technocrats, why would you IT dept not simply provide a pipe for you to use ?

11:20 gabe sure thing, dan. :)

11:20 GerryWaz2 they want to control adding more pipes

11:20 GerryWaz2 and the cost

11:21 GerryWaz2 and they have already spent millions on Windows Media

11:21 GerryWaz2 which they can control how it streams out

11:21 sealiz also being global bandwidth issues

11:21 ChrisW Ugh - Windows Media...

11:21 GerryWaz2 it's not that bad when done by corp service folks

11:21 RickW5 Gery - of course, but the issue is one of productivity, not forcing a specific technology - isn't it ;)?

11:22 GerryWaz2 most of our AP developers are SMEs and they use our central IT service for their video

11:22 GerryWaz2 it's more productive for them to have the experts produuce the video

11:23 GerryWaz2 I can't convince them to get on the Flash video bandwagon

11:23 RickW5 At my corporate job, we have the same sort of things, and yet, whenI produced a small compliance training session I used flash video, and had IT monitor bandwidth - they were thrilled at the small usage relative to WMP

11:23 AllianzDano812 Gabe or MVP's.. any thing you can tell us about when the next version may be available of AP? I haven't seen anything on that yet.

11:23 GerryWaz2 yeah, Gabe:)

11:23 sealiz I really wish you guys would look at making it easy to deliver m-learning with this next version :) that's my feature request!

11:24 GerryWaz2 Articulate will be part of its name :)

11:24 AllianzDano812 good to know

11:24 RickW5 pardon me, but what is "m-learning"

11:24 ChrisW When will corporate IT get over the "Microsoft for everything" mentality and start using the best tool for the specific job???

11:24 AllianzDano812 Will it come with Post-it notes Gerry?

11:24 AllianzDano812 :)

11:24 GerryWaz2 :)

11:24 GerryWaz2 if you are nice :)

11:24 sealiz mobile learning

11:24 sealiz delivering via Blackberry, ipods, etc.

11:25 GerryWaz2 I just like options

11:25 sealiz we're doing this now

11:25 RickW5 got it - many of my customers want distribution on CD"s as they just got phone service;)

11:25 ChrisW mLearning on the iPhone is going to be amazing.

11:25 sealiz and it's OK but I have to use plog-ins

11:25 sealiz plug

11:25 RickW5 let alone a mobile device - maybe a cordless phone qualifies

11:25 sealiz LOL

11:25 sealiz well it works well with VERY short modules on the Blackberry

11:26 RickW5 i'm not kidding, i wanted to stream our training online, and met with a small backlash

11:26 flaviofusuma ChrisW, sure it will

11:26 sealiz but I'd like to "press a button" and have things happen Gabe :)

11:26 gabe if only iphone supported flash...

11:26 gabe and sorry, dan, can't comment on availability of next AP, but i believe you're on our beta list.

11:26 stp flett hello there wuts happenen?

11:26 ChrisW I imagine Flash on iPhone isn't far off...

11:26 sealiz hey - how do we get on the beta list??

11:26 flaviofusuma I was reading about flash and iPhone compatibility.. and it will be soon available

11:27 RickW5 me too - beta

11:27 gabe sealiz or anyone who wants to participate in beta: just send me an email to request it: ------------------------

11:27 sealiz not sure how many of your folks have iPhones - ours don't and use the Blackberry instead

11:27 gabe that's great news, flavio! i hadn't heard re: iphone/flash

11:27 ChrisW Beta list? Where do I sign up? :)

11:27 sealiz done Gabe -thanks!

11:27 gabe now i just need an iphone. :)

11:27 sealiz nah - wait until the next gen iPhone

11:27 sealiz they won't have as many bugs as this one does

11:28 gabe yeah, that's my plan.

11:28 gabe i've been resisting the urge...

11:28 gabe just bought a new nano with nike+ to use running

11:28 gabe and dave challenged me to a miles contest:

http://www.mozealous.com/2008/02/dave-vs-gabe-arti…

11:28 flaviofusuma I have an iPod touch

11:28 RickW5 bye all - it's been fun

11:28 gabe how do you like the touch?

11:28 flaviofusuma I'm testing some web apps inside articulate

11:28 AllianzDano812 I own a cell phone.. therefore I-phone... that wil be the closest I will get.

11:29 sealiz :D

11:29 GerryWaz2 Great, Dan :)

11:29 ChrisW definitely wait for the next iPhone - shouldn't be many more months now.

11:29 flaviofusuma iTouch replaced my notebook at home...

11:29 ChrisW Then my wife gets my "old" one and I get the new one. :)

11:29 ChrisW I love spouse-enabled upgrades.

11:29 sealiz thanks all - this was fun! nice "meeting" you

11:31 Jen have a great day!

11:31 flaviofusuma bye Jen

11:31 gabe thanks, everyone!

11:31 gabe great chat!
